The Shatby necropolis is the oldest cemetery of ancient Alexandria, in use from the late fourth century BC, only a few decades after the city was founded. It was excavated between 1904 and 1910. The rock-cut tombs and burial chambers lie between Port Said Street and the Corniche in Shatby, opposite St Mark's College and near the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
