Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti was born in Cairo in 849 AH and became one of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, writing on Qur'an, hadith, law, language and history. He studied with the leading scholars of his day and travelled widely for knowledge, and in later life withdrew from public life to write. He passed away in 911 AH. Mazarat Misr records that his grave is here, opposite the Sayyida Aisha mosque, and a shrine in his name is also honoured in Asyut, his family's home town. The shrine stands beside the Salah Salem road at the northern end of the Qarafa.
