Sayyid Ali Abu Shubbak was a descendant of Ahmad al-Rifa'i. His father, Ahmad Izz al-Din al-Sayyad, came to Egypt in 638 AH and held dhikr gatherings in the mosque of Sayyiduna al-Husayn, and Ali was born in Egypt in 640 AH after his father had left. He was raised by his mother's family, became known for his asceticism, and later travelled to Syria to join his father. His shrine is inside al-Rifa'i Mosque, which was built between 1869 and 1912 on the site of the older zawiya and also holds the tombs of Khedive Isma'il and his family. It faces the Sultan Hasan Mosque below the Citadel.
