Sidi Muhammad Zahir al-Din, known as Abu al-Makarim, was born in 930 AH. His lineage goes back to Sayyid Hasan, brother of Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi, and through him to Sayyiduna al-Husayn. His mosque and shrine stand on the bank of the Rosetta branch of the Nile in Fuwwa, an old river town famous for its many Ottoman mosques.
