The Zaghloul Mosque is the largest and oldest mosque of Rashid. It was built in the late sixteenth century by Zaghloul, a mamluk of the governor Harun, whose tomb is inside, and it grew into a centre of learning for the town. In 1807 the call to resist the British Fraser expedition went out from here. Its prayer hall is a forest of several hundred antique columns, and it is known locally as the mosque of a thousand pillars. It stands in the southern part of the old town, and restoration work has been under way in recent years.
