The Egyptian Museum was opened in 1902 on Tahrir Square to house the national collection of antiquities, and for over a century it was the main museum of ancient Egypt in the world. Its domed building was designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Its halls hold statues, coffins, jewellery and objects from every period of ancient Egypt. Some of its best-known collections have moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, but it still holds a vast collection.
