The funerary complex of Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay was built between 1470 and 1474 in the desert cemetery east of the city. It brought together a mosque, the sultan's tomb, a sabil, a kuttab and lodgings, and it is often called the finest building of the late Mamluk period. Its stone dome is carved with an interlacing pattern of stars and arabesques, and its minaret rises in three slender stages. The complex is pictured on the Egyptian one-pound note and stands in the Northern Cemetery, a living quarter among the tombs.
