Salih al-Ja'fari was born in Dongola in Sudan in 1328 AH into the Ja'afira, a sharif family found in both Sudan and Egypt. He studied at al-Azhar, became an imam and lecturer there and taught in its Moroccan riwaq, and his lessons after the Friday prayer at al-Azhar drew large crowds. He founded the Ja'fariyya order, and his poems of praise are sung in its gatherings. He is buried in his mosque in al-Darrasa, behind al-Azhar and close to al-Azhar Park, and his son Abd al-Ghani lies with him.
