About Alija Izetbegović Museum (Vratnik Towers)

This museum is devoted to Alija Izetbegović (1925-2003), the first president of the Presidency of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, who led the country through the war of 1992-95. He was also a writer on Islam and society, best known for Islam Between East and West. The museum opened in 2007. It is housed in the Ploča and Širokac towers, two gate towers of the eighteenth-century Vratnik walls, and uses photographs, documents and personal belongings to tell his life story and that of the defence of Sarajevo. His grave lies a short walk away in the Kovači martyrs' graveyard. The museum has recently been listed as temporarily closed, so check before visiting.
