The Old City of Sana'a has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years. In the seventh and eighth centuries it became a major centre of Islam, and its heritage can be seen in more than 100 mosques, 14 bathhouses and over 6,000 houses built before the eleventh century. It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old city is famous for its multi-storey tower houses of stone and brick, decorated with white gypsum friezes and coloured glass windows. It is still enclosed in part by its old wall and entered through Bab al-Yaman, and its markets, mosques and gardens fill the area around the Sa'ila watercourse.
