Shabwa was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Hadramawt and an important station on the incense route, mentioned in South Arabian inscriptions and by Greek and Roman writers. The ruins of its walls, temple and palace stand in a desert valley west of Wadi Hadramawt, with massive dressed stone blocks still in place.
