The Great Mosque of Thula stands in the historic walled town of Thula, west of Amran, one of the best-preserved stone towns of the Yemeni highlands. The mosque is built of the same honey-coloured stone as the town, with domes over the prayer hall and an old cistern nearby. The fortress of Thula rises on the mountain above.
