Shaykh Muhammad Lutfi al-Fayyumi was born in Damascus in 1907 and studied with many of its leading scholars, above all Shaykh Abu al-Khayr al-Maydani, his main teacher. Hanafi in law and Naqshbandi in his spiritual path, he served from 1934 as imam and preacher of a Damascus mosque and taught for many years at the Kamiliyyah school, the Sharia College and other institutes. He taught the sciences of the Qur'an, belief and the principles of Islamic law to generations of students before passing away in the early 2000s. His grave lies in the al-Dahdah cemetery among the scholars of Damascus.
