Shaykh Muhammad Abu al-Khayr al-Maydani (1876 to 1961) was one of the most respected scholars of Damascus in the twentieth century. A Hanafi jurist and Naqshbandi guide, he studied under Shaykh Salim al-Masuti and taught in the al-Midan quarter for decades, and he led the League of Scholars of Syria. Many of the city's later scholars, including Shaykh Mahmud al-Rankusi and Shaykh Muhammad Lutfi al-Fayyumi, were his students. He was buried in Rawdat al-Ulama in the al-Dahdah cemetery.
