Bilal ibn Rabah was one of the first to accept Islam in Makkah. As an enslaved man he was tortured by his master for his faith, until Abu Bakr bought and freed him. In Madinah he became the first mu'adhdhin of Islam, calling the believers to prayer throughout the life of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, and he climbed the Ka'bah to give the call to prayer at the Conquest of Makkah. After the Prophet's ﷺ passing he left for Syria to join the campaigns there and settled in Damascus, where he passed away around 20 AH. His grave in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, under a small dome, is one of the most visited in the city.
