Bab al-Saghir is one of the oldest and most important cemeteries of Damascus, lying just outside the gate of the same name on the south side of the old city. It holds the graves of Companions such as Bilal ibn Rabah and Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, women of the Prophet's ﷺ family including Sayyidah Umm Kulthum, Sayyidah Fatimah al-Sughra and Sayyidah Sakinah, ceremonial graves of several Mothers of the Believers, and the shrine of the heads of the martyrs of Karbala. The Umayyad caliphs Mu'awiyah, Abd al-Malik and al-Walid were buried here, along with great scholars such as Ibn Asakir, Ibn Abidin and Shaykh Badr al-Din al-Hasani. The cemetery is still in use, and its small domed shrines, many rebuilt in recent decades, are visited by pilgrims every day.
