Al-Madrasah al-Nuriyyah al-Kubra was founded in the 1160s and 1170s by Nur al-Din Zangi, the ruler who united Syria and led the struggle against the Crusaders, as a school of Hanafi law in the old city of Damascus. When he passed away in 1174 he was buried here, in the domed chamber beside the street. The madrasa, with its tomb under a dome with a fine honeycomb (muqarnas) ceiling, stands in the Suq al-Khayyatin area near the Umayyad Mosque and is still used for teaching and prayer.
