Al-Madrasah al-Jaqmaqiyyah was built between 1418 and 1421 by Sayf al-Din Jaqmaq, the Mamluk governor of Damascus, beside the northern wall of the Umayyad Mosque. Its striped stone facade, carved decoration and domed tomb chamber make it one of the finest Mamluk buildings in the city. Today it houses the Museum of Arabic Calligraphy, with examples of Qur'anic and other inscriptions in the classical scripts, and it is easy to visit after the Umayyad Mosque.
