Al-Baqi' al-Gharqad has been the main cemetery of Madinah since the time of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ. The first Companion buried here was Uthman ibn Maz'un, and the Prophet ﷺ would come to greet those buried here and pray for them. Over the centuries thousands of Companions were laid to rest in its soil, together with members of the Prophet's ﷺ family, several of the Mothers of the Believers, the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt and many of the great scholars of Madinah. Until 1926 the graves of the Prophet's ﷺ family and the best-known Companions stood under white domes, which were demolished that year, leaving the low stone markings seen today. The cemetery lies immediately south-east of Masjid al-Nabawi. Men can usually enter for a short time after Fajr and after Asr, while women generally view it from outside the walls.
