Sayyiduna Aqil ibn Abi Talib was a cousin of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and an elder brother of Sayyiduna Ja'far and Sayyiduna Ali. He was taken captive with the Quraysh at Badr, later accepted Islam and settled in Madinah, and he was famed among the Arabs as an expert in genealogy and the history of the tribes. He passed away in Madinah in old age and was buried in his own house, which later became part of al-Baqi'. A dome was built over his grave and that of his nephew, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Ja'far, and it stood beside the dome of the Mothers of the Believers until the demolitions of 1926. Today only simple stones mark the place.
