Ammar ibn Yasir came from one of the first families to accept Islam in Makkah. His parents, Yasir and Sumayyah, were tortured for their faith, and Sumayyah became the first martyr in Islam. Ammar himself endured great hardship before emigrating, and in Madinah he worked with his own hands on the building of the Prophet's ﷺ mosque, carrying bricks alongside the other Companions. His home stood close to the mosque, in an area now covered by the expansions of Masjid al-Nabawi. Ammar fought at Badr and in the campaigns that followed, later served as governor of Kufa under Umar, and was martyred at Siffin in 37 AH while fighting on the side of Sayyiduna Ali.
