The Great Mosque of Samarra was built between 848 and 851 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil, and at the time it was the largest mosque in the world. Its spiral minaret, al-Malwiya, rises about 52 metres, with a ramp winding around the outside to the top. Most of the mosque's outer walls still stand, enclosing a vast empty courtyard. The mosque and minaret are part of the Samarra Archaeological City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which also includes the remains of the caliphs' palaces.
