Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (232–260 AH), the eleventh Imam of the Ahl al-Bayt in Shi'a belief, was the son of Imam Ali al-Hadi. He spent most of his life under Abbasid watch in the military town of Samarra, from which his title al-Askari comes, and passed away there in 260 AH at about twenty-eight years of age. He was buried beside his father under the golden dome of the al-Askariyyayn shrine. Nearby is the sardab, the cellar associated with Imam al-Mahdi.
