The Qishla is the Ottoman barracks and government house built on the Tigris in Baghdad in the 1860s. After the Ottoman period it became the seat of the new Iraqi state, and King Faisal I was crowned in its courtyard in 1921. Its long arcaded two-storey wings of yellow brick enclose a large garden courtyard beside the river and the clock tower. It has been restored as a cultural space, and on Fridays it fills with families, poets and musicians coming from the book market on al-Mutanabbi Street next door.
