The Qishla clock tower rises from the Ottoman barracks and government complex on the east bank of the Tigris at the end of al-Mutanabbi Street. The tower was begun in 1861 under the governor Namiq Pasha and completed in 1871 under Midhat Pasha. The clock that keeps time in the tower today was a gift from King George V to King Faisal I after his visit to Britain in 1927. The tower is one of the best-known landmarks of old Baghdad.
