Maqam al-Khidr is a small domed shrine on the west bank of the Tigris in Baghdad, close to the Shuhada Bridge, dedicated to al-Khidr, the servant of Allah whom Nabi Musa met and travelled with. It is one of many places in Iraq where people honour al-Khidr. Baghdadis have long come here, especially on Thursday evenings, to light candles on small trays with myrtle and set them floating on the river as they make their vows. The shrine looks across the water to the old Rusafa quarters around al-Mutanabbi Street.
