Known locally as Khutwat Sahib al-Zaman, the Step of the Master of the Age, this maqam in al-Dayr honours Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi, the twelfth of the Imams of the Prophet's ﷺ family. Like many maqams in southern Iraq it marks a place associated with him, and it is a centre of prayer and supplication for the people of al-Dayr and the villages around. The maqam stands near the river in the al-Dayr district, north of Basra on the road towards al-Qurna and Maysan. It has a mosque and facilities for visitors, and its riverside setting makes it a favourite with families on holidays and religious occasions. The shrine honoured as the grave of Nabi Sulayman at Qaryat Nasr is about 3 km away.
