This shrine is honoured as the grave of Sayyid Umar al-Ashraf, a son of Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin and brother of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir and Zayd ibn Ali. He was known for his learning and piety and lived to over sixty years of age. The shrine stands in the countryside north-west of Nasiriyah near the Euphrates, off the road to Samawah, and is reached by a footbridge across the river. Groups from Nasiriyah and the surrounding towns come here to visit.
