Sa'id ibn Jubayr was one of the great scholars of the generation after the Companions, a student of Abdullah ibn Abbas and one of the leading reciters and jurists of Kufa. He joined the revolt of Ibn al-Ash'ath against al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, was later captured, and was put to death by al-Hajjaj in Wasit in 95 AH. His shrine stands in the town of al-Hayy, south of Kut, and is a large place of visitation that has been rebuilt and expanded in recent years.
