Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (224–310 AH / 839–923) came from Amul in Tabaristan and settled in Baghdad, where he became one of the greatest scholars in Islamic history. His commentary on the Qur'an, Jami' al-Bayan, and his history of prophets and kings, Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk, remain basic works in both fields, and he also founded a school of law of his own that later died out. He was buried in Baghdad, and his tomb stands in al-A'zamiyya, where it is visited by students of knowledge.
