The Shibliyya Madrasa was founded by the emir Shibl al-Dawla Kafur al-Husami, a freedman of Husam al-Din Muhammad ibn Lajin, son of Sitt al-Sham, and is mentioned by Ibn Kathir in his history. Shibl al-Dawla passed away in 623 AH and was buried there, and the madrasa was known as al-Shibliyya al-Barraniyya, the outer Shibliyya. The madrasa stands on the old Salihiyya road near the Thawra bridge. What survives today are the stone walls and arches of the building and the tomb of its founder, preserved by the Damascus Governorate as a heritage site.
