Shaykh Ahmad Kaftaro (1915–2004) was a Naqshbandi shaykh and the Grand Mufti of Syria from 1964 until his passing. In the Rukn al-Din district on the slopes of Mount Qasiyun he built the Abu al-Nour mosque and its institute, which became one of the largest centres of Islamic teaching in Damascus and welcomed students from many countries. He is buried in the Abu al-Nour complex, and the mosque remains a busy place of prayer, Friday sermons and study.
