Hammam al-Silsila is one of the traditional public bathhouses of Old Damascus, standing just north of the Umayyad Mosque near the shrine of Sayyida Ruqayyah. Damascus once had well over a hundred such baths, and this is one of the few still working today. The hammam follows the classic Damascene layout of a domed outer hall for resting, a warm middle section and a hot inner room, and visitors come for the steam, scrub and wash in the traditional way. Women's sessions are held by reservation. It sits in the lanes of al-Amara, a short walk from the mosque's northern gate.
