The Latakia National Museum is housed in an old khan near the sea front of Latakia, a building said to date from the Ottoman period, once used for the tobacco trade. It holds collections from Ugarit and the other ancient sites of the coast, along with Islamic-period objects. The museum is surrounded by a large garden. The Great Mosque of Latakia and the old souqs of the city are close by, and the ruins of Ugarit lie a few kilometres to the north.
