Located in the historic al-Salihiyyah quarter of Damascus, near the former Hanbali monastery and the old cotton market, this mosque is named after Sayyiduna Suraqah ibn Malik al-Mudliji (RA). Historical Damascene records also refer to it by the local name Masjid Bisaqah. The mosque was established in honour of the renowned Companion and is not known to contain his grave. Sayyiduna Suraqah (RA) is remembered for pursuing Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (RA) during the Hijrah, hoping to claim the reward offered by Quraysh. When the legs of his horse repeatedly sank into the ground, he recognised that Nabi Muhammad ﷺ was under divine protection and requested safety. He later embraced Islam and became a respected Companion. He lived around Qudayd and Makkah and is commonly reported to have died in 24 AH.
