The Hedge Labyrinth of the Alameda del Obispo Estate ( Laberinto de seto de la finca Alameda del Obispo ) is one of the most remarkable historic garden features in Córdoba. Originally designed in the 18th century, the maze was laid out in the grounds of the Alameda del Obispo estate, a site that had long been associated with Córdoba’s agricultural and botanical heritage. The earliest labyrinth was planted with orange trees or boxwood, reflecting Andalusí traditions of ordered gardens that symbolised paradise. In the 20th century, the layout was replanted with spindle (bonetero) shrubs, carefully maintaining the original 18th-century design. It is today considered one of the few surviving historic labyrinth gardens in Spain and forms part of the estate that also houses Córdoba’s agricultural research centre (IFAPA). The labyrinth stands as a reminder of Córdoba’s continuity of garden culture, linking the Islamic concept of structured, water-nourished gardens with later European horticultural traditions.
