Ushaiqer is an old town of the Najd, about 200 km north-west of Riyadh near Shaqra, settled for many centuries thanks to its springs and palm groves and long a stop for pilgrim caravans to Makkah. Its walled old quarter has around 400 mud-brick houses and some 25 mosques, built with limestone foundations and roofs of tamarisk and palm. Local families began restoring the village in 2003, and its lanes, wells, mosques and small house museums can now be explored on foot. It is open daily and is busiest at weekends and holidays.
