Sayyidah Aminah bint Wahb, the mother of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, took him at the age of six to Yathrib, the town that later became Madinah, to visit the grave of her husband Abdullah and his relatives there. On the way back to Makkah she fell ill and passed away at al-Abwa', and she was buried here. The young boy returned to Makkah with his nurse, Umm Ayman, and was raised by his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib. The grave lies on a hillside at al-Abwa', a remote area inland from Rabigh, and the old structure over it was removed long ago. It is not easy to reach and is usually visited by small groups with a local guide, who come to reflect on the Prophet's ﷺ childhood as an orphan.
