About Qamariya Mosque

The Qamariya is one of the oldest mosques of Baghdad still in use, built in the late Abbasid period on the Tigris bank in Karkh. Its name is linked to a woman of the caliph's household, Qamariya, and it is dated either to the reign of al-Nasir or of al-Mustansir in the early 13th century. After floods and the events of 1258 it was restored, rebuilt by the Ottoman governor Sa'id Pasha and repaired again in 1980. The prayer hall has a roof of small domes on columns, tiled lower walls and painted upper walls, and its cylindrical brick minaret is unlike the usual Baghdadi form. It stands near the Grave of Habib al-Ajami.
