This traditional Baghdadi house stands on the Tigris in the Kuraymat quarter of Karkh. It was built in 1917 by Abd al-Majid al-Shawi, a Baghdad writer and poet who held administrative posts in the late Ottoman period and later served as mayor of Baghdad. It follows the classic plan of the old houses of Baghdad, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The house is used as offices and is not open to visitors, but it can be seen from outside on a walk along the Karkh riverside.
