Shali is the old fortified town of Siwa, built in the thirteenth century from karshif, a mixture of salt rock and mud. Its people lived inside its walls for centuries, until heavy rains in 1926 damaged the houses. Its ruined lanes and towers rise in the centre of the modern town, and the top gives views across the oasis.
