Umar ibn al-Farid, called 'the Sultan of the Lovers', was born in Cairo in 576 AH and became the greatest Sufi poet of the Arabic language. His father registered marriage dues, which gave the family its name, and his odes of divine love, among them the Ta'iyya and the Khamriyya, are still sung in dhikr gatherings. He passed away in 632 AH. His mosque and shrine stand at the foot of al-Muqattam in the Qarafa, reached through narrow lanes.
