Thawban ibn Ibrahim, known as Dhul-Nun al-Misri, was born in Akhmim in Upper Egypt and became the great scholar and ascetic of his age, one of the first to speak of the states and stations of the spiritual path. Summoned to Baghdad by the caliph al-Mutawakkil, he so moved him that he was sent home with honour. He passed away in 245 AH, and Mazarat Misr tells that green birds were seen above his bier. His grave lies in a room beside the grave of Uqba ibn Amir in the Qarafa al-Sughra, with the grave of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya beside his. A shrine in his name is also honoured in Baghdad.
