Al-Muhammadi al-Dimirdash was born in Tabriz in 857 AH and came to Egypt as a young man in the service of Sultan Qaytbay. Mazarat Misr tells that the sultan found him at worship on a stormy night and called him 'Demir Tash', 'iron stone', for his endurance, and that he left court life to follow the Khalwati path. His mosque, built in 1523, stands in the grounds of the Demerdash hospital in Abbasiya, which takes its name from him, and his shrine is inside.
