The mosque of al-Zahir Baybars was built in 1267 to 1269 by the Mamluk sultan al-Zahir Baybars outside the northern walls of the city, in the Husayniyya district. It was one of the largest mosques of its time. Its great courtyard and stone walls survived centuries of other uses, and it has been restored in recent years and reopened for prayer. It stands on Midan al-Zahir, north of Bab al-Futuh.
