Qubbat al-Mahdi is the domed mosque built in 1164 AH (1751) by Imam al-Mahdi Abbas ibn al-Husayn, who ruled northern Yemen from Sana'a between 1161 and 1189 AH and is buried here. It stood beside the Sultan's Garden, which served as the seat of government in his time. The mosque follows the Ottoman style, with hemispherical domes over the prayer hall and the imam's grave, much like al-Bakiriyya, and is built of black stone with a tall minaret. It stands on the western bank of the Sa'ila in the Qubbat al-Mahdi quarter.
