Suhayb ibn Sinan, known as Suhayb al-Rumi, was one of the earliest Muslims in Makkah. Carried off as a child by Byzantine raiders, he came to Makkah as a free man and prospered as a merchant, then gave up all his wealth to the Quraysh so that he could emigrate to Madinah. He led the prayers after Umar ibn al-Khattab was stabbed, passed away in Madinah in 38 AH and was buried in al-Baqi'. The Sahabah Mosque, the Mosque of the Companions, in the al-Midan district of Damascus has a room with a ceremonial grave raised in his honour, which gave the mosque its name. It is an old mosque in the Damascene style with a slightly leaning minaret.
