About Apamea Ancient City

Apamea, Afamiya in Arabic, was founded around 300 BC by Seleucus I and named after his wife Apama. It became one of the great cities of Roman and Byzantine Syria, and its main colonnaded street, nearly two kilometres long, is one of the longest in the ancient world. The Muslims took the city in 17 AH (638), and it later declined after earthquakes. It lies on a plateau above the Orontes valley beside the castle of Qal'at al-Mudiq and its Ottoman khan.
