Al-Uqair was the historic seaport of Al-Ahsa on the Gulf coast and for centuries the main sea gateway to Najd, through which goods reached the interior. Its role faded after the opening of Dammam port and the railway in the 1950s. The surviving buildings include the customs house, the khan for travellers, the governor's buildings, a mosque, a spring and the Abu Zahmul tower, several of them restored in 1997. The site lies on the coast north-east of Hofuf and is often closed, so it is best seen as part of a drive to the beach.
