In 6 AH Nabi Muhammad ﷺ set out for Makkah with around 1,400 Companions to perform Umrah, but the Quraysh blocked their way and they halted at al-Hudaybiyyah, at the edge of the sacred boundary. When a rumour spread that Uthman ibn Affan, who had gone into Makkah as an envoy, had been killed, the Companions pledged under a tree to stand by the Prophet ﷺ to the end, a pledge known as Bay'at al-Ridwan. The Quraysh then sent Suhayl ibn Amr to agree a truce. Its terms seemed hard to many of the Muslims, but the ten-year peace allowed Islam to spread rapidly and opened the way for the Conquest of Makkah two years later. Al-Hudaybiyyah, today called al-Shumaysi, lies about twenty kilometres west of Makkah on the old Jeddah road, where the remains of an old mosque stand beside a newer one.
